George Frederick Gilroy was the son of George Frederick and Alice Frankleen Gilroy, of Fulham, London, he enlisted in the Welch Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Gilroy successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course number 35 from 29 October to 7 November 1942, with ground training at Hardwick prior to the course. He was posted to C Company, 6th (10th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers) Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and took part in operations in Italy, Southern France and Greece.
Pte Gilroy was killed in action on 29 December 1944, aged 28, and was buried in Phaleron War Cemetery, Greece.
