Francis Winters enlisted in The Essex Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Winters successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Kabrit, Egypt, and was posted to 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Winters was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial by the side of Amsterdamseweg, west of the La Cabine pumping station, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 7 September 1945.
