Lance Corporal Robert Twist

Robert Twist was the son of Henry and Annie Twist; husband of Agnes Jean Tate Twist, of Belford, Northumberland; and father of Jean and Vickie Twist. He enlisted in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and volunteered for airborne forces, at first with the 151 Bn.

Lance Corporal Twist successfully completed parachute training at RAF Chakrabati, India, on course number 29, and was posted to 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

L/Cpl Twist was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial in the grounds of Grangues Chateau, and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 1 June 1945. He was a married man and his wife Agnes lived at Belford in Northumberland. He was a passenger in the same aircraft as John Gascoigne.
