James Marr Thomson was the son of James and Charlotte Marr Thomson, of Edinburgh, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Thomson successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 121 from 19 June to 1 July 1944. His course report stated, ”Only fair parachutist, slightly nervous, worked hard”. He was posted to 8th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Thomson was killed in action on 31 March 1945, aged 19, during operation Varsity and was given a field burial at Greven, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 23 May 1947.
