Private Angus Smith

Angus Smith was the son of Alexander and Flora Montgomery Smith, of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

He enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders in 1933, aged 17, and saw service with the battalion in many parts of the world, including China, the Malay States, North Africa, and then volunteered for Airborne Forces and successfully completed parachute training at RAF Chakrabati, India.

Private Smith was posted to B Company, 6 Platoon, 7th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (‘D’ Day Landings), Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte Smith Died of Wounds on 3 April 1945, aged 29, whilst taking part in Operation Varsity and was given a field burial at Vortlage Proprietary, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 17 May 1947.
