Walter Shirra, son of David and Mary Shirra, of Glasgow, he enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Shirra successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number B150 from 24 January to 8 February 1945, and was posted to 12th (Yorkshire) Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Shirra was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 18, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
