Frederick John Sheath was the son of Frederick and Mabel (Bushnell) Sheath, of Portswood, Southampton. He enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment and volunteered for Airborne Forces.
Private Sheath successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 82, from 13 to 23 September 1943. His course report stated ”Cheerful and confident, jumped well”. He was posted to 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (D Day landings).
Pte Sheath was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 22, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
