Lieutenant Gordon Sterrey Parfitt, son of George Trevelyan Parfitt and Ethel Louise May Parfitt, of Newport, Monmouthshire served with 9th Parachute Battalion, after completion of his Parachute Training Course (No 81) at Ringway in mid-September 1943.
He took part in the D-Day landings in Normandy, during Op Overlord, emplaning with the rest of the Battalion at RAF Harwell at 22.30 hrs on 5 June 1944. He was among the 750 men who parachuted into Normandy early the following morning between 00.50 and 01.17 hrs.
Lieutenant Parfitt died on 9 June 1944, aged 23 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
