Private George Oliver, son of Mr and Mrs David Oliver, of Woodvale, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
George enlisted with the Royal Irish Fusiliers before volunteering for the airborne forces. He was jump trained at RAF Ringway on Course 61. This 'long course' of 8 jumps, ran between 19 April and 5 May 1943. His instructor noted this about his performance:
"Good team man, spirit and guts. Good performer"
He was then posted with 3rd Parachute Battalion. George took part in the invasion of Sicily, during Op Husky.
Oliver died on 14 July 1943, aged 22 years old. He is now commemorated on the Memorial at Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.
