Private Jack Munro

Jack Munro, son of Donald and Helen Munro, of Tain, Ross and Cromarty enlisted into the Seaforth Highlanders before volunteering for airborne forces.

After completing the selection course at Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield, he was sent on parachute course 89, at RAF Ringway, 28 October to 9 November 1943. There were 281 trainees on the course from various units and between them they completed 2077 descents. Upon completion of the course, which consisted of 2 day-time balloon, 1 night-time balloon and 5 aircraft descents, his parachute instructor commented that he was ‘Hard working. Capable.’

Private Jack Munro was posted to 11 Platoon, B Company, 9th Parachute Battalion.

He took part in the D-Day landings to Normandy on 5-6 June 1944.

Pte Munro died on 5 July 1944, aged 22 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
