Michael James McGuirk was born and lived in Eire, he enlisted in the Irish Guards and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal McGuirk successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 104, from 21 February to 2 March 1944. His course report stated “Capable and reliable, good worker, above average”. He was posted to 9th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Cpl McGuirk was killed in action on 6 June 1944, age 23, and was given a field burial at Gonneville-sur-Merville and re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France on 16 July 1945.
