Hugh McArdle, son of Hugh Joe and Kate McArdle, of Monaghan, Irish Republic, enlisted in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, transferred to the Durham Light Infantry and then volunteered for the airborne forces.
Private McArdle attended parachute course 36 at RAF Ringway from 6 to 12 November 1942, and was then posted to the 2nd Parachute Battalion and took part in Operation Torch in North Africa.
Pte McArdle was Killed in Action on 28 March 1943, aged 22. He is commemorated on the Medjez-El-Bab memorial.
