Lance Sergeant Charles Edward Matthews was the son of Walter William and Beatrice Matthews, and husband of Vera Florence Matthews, of Palmers Green, Middlesex. He served with 11th Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem. He was parachute jump trained on Course K55 in Karbrit. He served with The Royal West Kent Regiment before volunteering with the airborne forces.
Lance Sergeant Matthews died on 21 September 1944, aged 24 years old. He is now buried at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
