Lance Corporal William Loney, son of William and Mary Loney, of Dewsbury, Yorkshire, enlisted into the Royal Artillery.
Gunner Loney volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 37, which ran at RAF Ringway in November 1942. He was then posted to 8 Platoon, C Company, The 2nd Parachute Battalion.
He was sent to North Africa on Operation and served in Sicily and Italy before returning to the UK in November 1943.
Lance Corporal Loney jumped into of Arnhem on 17 September 1944 on Operation Market Garden. He was Killed the same day when he he was shot by machine gun fire as he entered Arnhem town.
Lance Corporal Loney died on 17 September 1944, aged 26 years old. He is now commemorated on the Memorial at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Arnhem.
