Lance Corporal Victor Alfred Lightfoot, son of Frederick and Emma Lightfoot, of Welling, Kent. He served with 13th (South Lancs) Parachute Battalion, and took part in the Normandy campaign, during Op Overlord. before this he served with The Duke of Wellington's Regiment and 151 Bn in India.
Lance Corporal Lightfoot died on 25 June 1944, aged 27 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
Of the 3 soldiers killed on 26 June 1944, only one incidence of death was recorded at 0028 hours. The Battalion Padre Capt W Foy wrote an account of his experiences at Normandy which includes the following report:
"On the next journey to the Main Dressing Station (MDS), on that dreadful night, I took a man (L/Cpl Victor Lightfoot) whose legs and thighs had been smashed to smithereens. For 2 miles I heard his anguished screams behind me and all I could do was to drive at walking pace. He died 5 minutes after reaching the MDS"
This MDS was run by 225th Para Field Ambulance RAMC and was located north of Ranville at a location called Ecarde.
