Private Herbert Cedric Lane, son of Charles and Elizabeth Lane, of Greenfield, Bedfordshire, served with 12th (Yorks) Parachute Battalion (formerly 10th Bn, Green Howards). He took part in the Normandy campaign, during Op Overlord. Although in the CWGC records his name as Herbert, his birth certificate records his name as Hilbert, and he was nicknamed 'Hilby' by his family.
Private Lane died on 22 August 1944, aged 20 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy. The inscription on his headstone reads "God alone knows how we miss you. Mother, sisters and brothers".
