Sergeant Robert Kerr

Robert Kerr was the son of John McLean and Margaret Buchanan (Hamilton) Kerr, of Glasgow, he enlisted in the Black Watch (The Royal Highland Regiment) and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Kerr successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 117 from 21 May to 8 June 1944. His course report stated “Cheerful and keen NCO, jumps well, an asset to stick”. He was posted to B Company, 5 Platoon, 5 Section, 12th (10th Battalion the Green Howards [Yorkshire Regiment]) Bn., the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Sgt Kerr was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 28, whilst taking part in the daylight parachute drop into Germany as part of the Rhine Crossing during operation Varsity and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 14 November 1946.
