Bernard Paul Kearns, son of Tom and Mrs Kearns and husband of Daisy Kearns, of Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, enlisted in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Kearns successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on 3 Advanced Course from 21 to 29 January 1942 and was posted to HQ Platoon, A Company, 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Kearns was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 31. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
