Edward Leonard James, son of Sidney and Florence James, of Aldershot, Hampshire, enlisted into the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private James successfully completed his parachute training on course 93 at RAF Ringway between 29 November and 13 December 1943, his course report states; ‘confident and keen.’
He was posted to 7 Platoon, C Company, The 11th Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, Operation Market Garden.
Pte James was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 18, and was buried in Wageningen General Cemetery.
