Sergeant Charles William Hayes was the son of Charles William and Margery Hayes, and husband of Iris Hayes, of Chelmsford, Essex. He began his military service with the Essex Regiment and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in early 1942 when serving as an Acting Corporal with the Essex Regiment in the Middle East.

He transferred to Airborne service with as Platoon Sergeant of 9 Platoon, C Company, 156th Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.

Sergeant Hayes died on 16 March 1945, aged 34 years old. He is now buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, Bayern, Germany.
