William Smith served in the Royal Artillery prior to volunteering for airborne forces during World War II.
He qualified as a military parachutist on course 84 which ran at RAF Ringway from 20 September to 1 October 1943 and was posted as a reinforcement to B Company 12 Parachute Battalion.
