James Friel, the son of John and Rose Friel, of Killygordon, Co. Donegal, Eire, enlisted into the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and then volunteered for the airborne forces.
Private Friel attended parachute course 29 at RAF Ringway from 28 September to 3 October 1942. He was then posted to C Company, 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Torch in North Africa.
Pte Friel was killed in action on 29 March 1943, age 25 years old and is commemorated on the Medjez-El-Bab memorial.
