William Fifield, son of Hector McDonald and Selby Fifield, of Cwmdu, Swansea, enlisted into the General Service Corps and then volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Fifield successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course 94/95 from 6 to 20 December 1943, his course report stated that he reached a good standard. He was posted to B Company, 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Fifield was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
