Peter John Donnelly was the husband of May Donnelly, of Stalybridge, Cheshire. He enlisted into the Royal Scots Fusiliers and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Donnelly successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, and was posted to Defence Platoon, Headquarters Company, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Donnelly (Brigadier John Hackett’s batman) was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 28, and was given a field burial in an isolated grave near the culvert under the railway line Utrecht-Arnhem, close to Wolfheze. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 January 1946.
