Joseph Dimmack, son of George and Ann Dimmack of Hull, enlisted into The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) before volunteering for airborne forces in the summer of 1943.
Private Dimmack qualified as a military parachutist on course 78 which ran at RAF Ringway in August 1943. The course instructors' notes record 'Pte Dimmack: Enthusiastic and confident, good performer’. He was posted to the Holding Company before being posted to 2 Platoon, A Company, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion.
He jumped into Normandy on D Day 6 June 1944 and later saw action in the Ardennes, the Rhine Crossing and as part of the 6th Airborne Division advance to the Baltic.
Sgt Dimmack is recorded as lost at sea on 29 March 1946. Although circumstances around his death are not known his battalion were in Semerang in North Java at the time. He is commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey.
