Sidney Clayton was the son of William and Florence Clayton, of Smethwick, Staffordshire, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Private Clayton successfully completed parachute training on course number 105A at RAF Ringway from 1 to 14 March 1944. His course report stated “Confident pupil in any position, progressed very well”. He was posted to B Company, 8th (Midlands) Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).
Pte Clayton was killed in action on 25 August 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial at Quetteville, and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 25 October 1945.
