Lance Sergeant Herbert Cartlidge

Herbert Cartlidge was the son of David Frank Horace and Miriam Cartlidge; husband of Muriel Irene Cartlidge, of Malton, Yorkshire, he enlisted in the Green Howards and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Lance Sergeant Cartlidge successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 88, from 18 to 30 October 1943. His course report stated, “Very keen and reliable, ground work and parachuting excellent”. He was posted to 12th (Yorkshire) Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

L/Sgt Cartlidge was killed in action on 12 June 1944, aged 23, and was given a field burial at Breville and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 5 July 1945.
