Private Francis James Bates, son of James Harold and Florence Lilian Bates, of Stirchley, Birmingham, served with 8th (Midlands) Parachute Battalion. He took part in the Normandy campaign.
Private Bates died on 5 August 1944, aged 20 years old. He is now commemorated on the Memorial near Bayeux War Cemetery, Normandy.
