Edward Nicholson, son of Henry and Margaret Nicholson, of Salterbeck, Workington, Cumberland, enlisted in the Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Corporal Nicholson successfully completed Glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion the Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Cpl Nicholson was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 24. He was originally given a field burial and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 12 February 1948.
