Joe was a lovely fellow. He sank very suddenly when we got into trouble. I nearly followed him when the glacial water about a yard down sucked the force out of my legs as I trod water. We hadn’t been warned to un-blouse our trousers and the water trapped in them was like sandbags. We had been ordered to tie our weapons to our wrists with Para or D10 cable. Joe’s weapon fell off his bergan. He didn’t have a chance. But I was saved by David Fox-Pitt who pushed his bergan over when my SLR fell off my bergan too. I hung between the two for a long time while the safety boat was summoned. Requiescat in pace, Joe.
