Captain Richard CB Merriam Viney MC

Richard Charles Brankston Merriam Viney MC, was born in 1924. His was the fourth son of Col. OV Viney, of Aylesbury. He was educated at Oundle and Phillips Academy in The US. Richard spent 7 days adrift in an open boat in The Atlantic ocean after his ship was torpedoed. He served with The Ox and Bucks Light Regiment and the Black Watch.

Richard was a awarded an MC for this actions on the Rhine Crossing with The Ox and Bucks Light Inf (non airborne). Recorded in The London Gazette, March 1945. He later in August 1951 became a Staff captain with 44 Para Brigade TA. 

In 1947 he read Modern History for 2 years at University College, Oxford. 

Richard was a member of the Alpine Club and Secretary of The Climbers' Club. He was killed, whilst on holiday, in a climbing accident on Jagihorn in the Alps on 29 July 1956 along with his friend Tom Bourdillon. Viney's obituary appears on p378 of the 1956 Alpine Journal.
