Ralph Maurice Cox enlisted into The South Staffordshire Regiment and later transferred to the Royal Artillery.
Sergeant Cox volunteered for airborne forces and attended Course 103, which ran at RAF Ringway from 15 to 28 February 1944, for parachute training. The course instructors' notes record: "Sgt Cox: Good performer, a leader who set good example."
Sgt Cox was posted to C Company, The 12th (Yorkshire) Parachute Battalion (12th Para Bn).
He was Stick Commander on aircraft 193 on 6 June 1944 when the 12th Para Bn jumped into Normandy as part of Operation Overlord. Sgt Cox saw further active service fighting in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge and jumped on the Rhine Crossings during Operation VARSITY and then advanced across Germany to the Baltic.
He returned to The Royal Artillery on 29 June 1945. Ralph died aged 101 on 23 May 2016
