Bernard Skerry enlisted into the General Service Corps before being posted to The 107th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (King's Own) (107 RAC).
Private Skerry volunteered for airborne forces in late 1943 and undertook parachute course 98 which ran at RAF Ringway from 10 to 21 January 1944. The course report states that Pte Skerry ‘reached a high standard of jumping.’
He was then posted to 14 Platoon, C Company, The 9th (Essex) Parachute Battalion and parachuted into Normandy on D Day, 6 June 1944.
Pte Skerry was taken a Prisoner of War and sent to Stalag 4G in Oschatz, Germany.
