Peter Kilbride was born in Newton Butler, Northern Ireland and enlisted The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1932-33.
In 1937 he married but his wife Gwladys died the following year.
While in the Far East he volunteered for airborne forces in 1942 and completed Parachute Jumping Course 30 at the Air Landing School at Chaklala, near Rawlpindi in the Punjab.
On returning to the UK, he was posted to Headquarters Company, The 8th (Midland) Parachute Battalion.
Corporal Kilbride jumped on D Day into Normandy, on Operation Overlord, as part of HQ Coy, 8 Para Bn and was wounded by a gunshot wound to his right thigh on Sunday 20 August 1944. He was taken to a field hospital behind the front line. But died of his wounds the next day, aged 30 years old.
Cpl Kilbride was eventually laid to rest at the Bayeux War Cemetery. Normandy, France.
