Edmund Benjamin James Cunnell of Ipswich, Suffolk was employed as a Carpenter and Joiner before enlistment, at the age of 22, into Royal Engineers (RE) at Ipswich in December 1939. He married his wife Ruby in October 1940.
Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Cunnell volunteered for airborne forces in December 1944 and was posted to 249 Field Company RE (Airborne). He served in the Ardennes and on The Rhine Crossing (Operation Varsity).
CSM Cunnell transferred to 591 (Antrim) Parachute Squadron RE in June 1945 and went on Operation Doomsday in Norway. Due to the end of the war and departure to Norway, CSM Cunnell did not undertake parachute training.
He was demobbed in January 1946.
