Warrant Officer Class 1 Frederick G B Martin

Frederick George Beattie Martin enlisted into the Royal East Kent Regiment (The Buffs).

He later transferred into the Grenadier Guards before volunteering for airborne forces.

Corporal Martin served with 11th Special Air Service (SAS) Battalion, which was redesignated as 1st Parachute Battalion on 15 September 1941. He undertook parachute training on No 3 Advanced Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 21 to 29 January 1942.

By the time 1st Para Bn was deployed for North Africa and Operation Torch in 1942, Sergeant Martin served as section leaderr with No1 Section, 9 Platoon, T Company (Coy). He also serve active service in Italy.

By the time he jumped into Arnhem for Operation Market Garden on Sunday 17 September 1944, WO11 Martin was the Company Sergeant Major of HQ Coy. CSM Martin was eventually taken Prisoner of War and was held in camp Stalag 12A in Limburg Germany.

After liberation CSM Martin continued to serve in The Parachute Regiment and served with 1 Para Bn in Palestine.

In 1954 Regimental Sergeant Major Martin was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
