John Gill was born in Blockley, Worcestershire, in 1923. He joined the Gloster Regiment at the age of 19 in February 1942. He volunteered for airborne forces in February 1944.
Private 'Jack' Gill was assigned to 22 Independent Parachute Company and served in the Ardennes and on Operation Varsity (the Rhine Crossing).
At the end of the War in Europe, Pte Gill was stationed in Java, as part of the force charged with overseeing the end of Japanese occupation.
In 1946 he was stationed in Palestine. Pte Gill demobbed in February 1947.
'Jack' was an early member of the Parachute Regiment Old Comrades Association joining in 1946. He married Edna Compton in March 1950 and they had two daughters, Lyndsey and Jaquiline.
'Jack' died in 2001.
