Norman Joyce Townsley was born in Belfast in 1905, after leaving school he studied medicine at Queens University in Belfast. He then qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and worked as a Surgeon until the outbreak of The Second World War in 1939. He then volunteered to join the Royal Army Medical Corps, but was told that he was needed to remain as a civilian surgeon, to look after the local population, and would be called when he was needed.
In February 1945 he was granted an emergency commission as a Lieutenant in 181 Airlanding Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps (181 AFA). Lt Townsley served on Operation Doomsday in Norway.
He was later sent to the Far-East and became Officer Commanding of 11th Indian Mobile Surgical Unit, and after this he served as a Surgeon with 52 Indian General Hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel Townsley was demobbed in 1947.
