Corporal Cyril Albert James Eckert, son of Albert James and Mary Eckert, served with 13th (South Lancs) Parachute Battalion after completing Parachute Jump Course 87 at Ringway in late October 1943, with the comments: 'Keen, good worker intelligent, excellent performer'. He took part in the Normandy campaign, during Op Overlord.
Due to his date of death, it is possible he was killed during the Battalion engagement and withdrawal from Pont L'Eveque after two-day battle on 23 August which took place after German reinforcements had prompted a short pitched battle, destroying much of the village before withdrawal of Allied troops across the river crossing.
Corporal Eckert died on 23 August 1944, aged 22 years old. He is now buried at Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy. His younger brother Lance Corporal Stanley Eckert was also killed during the Normandy campaign on D-Day 6 June 1944, and now lies close by at Ranville.
