Corporal CHARLES D MACBAIN

Corporal Charles MacBain was born in Forres/Nairn Scotland, although his actual year of birth was 1904, when he enlisted (Gordons - London Scottish) 24 February 1940, he gave his Date of Birth as 28 May 1912. He saw action in Africa, Egypt, Sicily and Italy until 14 November 1943, transferring to the South Staffs Regiment on 15 November 1943.

He  was involved in Operation Market Garden, landing by Glider on Sunday 17 September 1944. On Tuesday 26 September 1944 he escaped capture by swimming across the river during the night. From Arnhem he was posted to Norway as part of Operation Doomsday and was awarded a Certificate of Thanks dated 8 May 1945 for the liberation of Norway. Infantry Record Office Shrewsbury records that Charles was de-mobilised on 18 February 1946

On his return from Arnhem he gave an interview with the local newspaper (Worthing Gazette - 18 October 1944) giving an brief account of his 9 days involved in Operation Market Garden. The interview headline was "SHEER UNADULTERATED HELL".
