James Ritchie initially joined the Black Watch, but was then 'claimed' by a family member into 2nd Battalion Scots Guards.
He also saw service with No.1 (Guards) Independent Parachute Company, jumping with an element of the Company into the Suez Crisis in 1956 alongside 3 Para.

After the army, he joined Angus Constabulary and on amalgamation in 1977, Tayside Police, where he covered all towns in Angus over the years, ending his Police career in Montrose as a Sergeant.

Outside work, he was involved in The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (teaching navigation and hillwalking skills), Boys Brigade (both aforementioned were local, Scottish and UK level) and loved getting out into the hills at the slightest opportunity.
