Alfred J Broome was a 10th Battalion airborne(Sussex Regiment). He was a cobbler before joining the army.
Before this he was a member of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment. After the fighting at the battle for Ela Alamein in July 1942, members of this regiment were asked if they wanted to become paratroopers. 7 Officers and 200 'other ranks' volunteered for this training. It it believed that Alfred was one of these 200 volunteers. He was parachute jump trained in Kabrit, probably late 1942. Archive records are not available for this period, so exact training dates are unknown.
Active in Operation Market Garden, captured as a POW on 20 September 1944 in Arnhem and taken to Stalag 12A. His POW number was 90616.
