Lance Corporal William H Tanner

William Henry Tanner was the son of William Henry and Maud Blanche (Lewis) Tanner; husband of Elsie (Clapham) Tanner. They married in July 1938 in Islington, London. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Tanner successfully completed glider training and was posted to 12th (Airborne) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing). William also took part in Operation 'Neptune' His name is included on a roll of 12th Devons who landed on Normandy 6 and 7 of June.

L/Cpl Tanner was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 30, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 24 April 1947.
