John Victor Ridgely was actually christened Victor John Ridgely and was the son of Allan and Mable Louisa (Rogers) Ridgely, of Buckinghamshire. He had 3 brothers and 6 sisters. He enlisted in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.
Signalman Ridgely successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 114 from 1 to 12 May 1944. His course report stated "A good performer, hard worker, high morale". He was posted to 6th (Airborne) Divisional Signals, J Section, Royal Corps of Signals, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Sgmn Ridgely was killed in action on 24 March 1945, age 30, and was given a field burial at Hovelsmannhof, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 30 October 1946.
