James Edward Thomas Murton was the son of Henry William George and Lucy (Higham) Murton, of Oxford; husband of Hilda Ruth Margaret (Scarrott) Murton, of Hull. They married in July 1941 in Oxford. James enlisted in the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Murton successfully completed glider training and was posted to the 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Pte Murton was killed in action on 2 April 1945, aged 25, and was given a field burial at Greven, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 23 May 1947.
