Tom Markey was the son of Stanley and Jane Hannah (Jeffrey) Markey, of Waterfoot, Lancashire, he enlisted in The General Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.
Rifleman Markey successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, and took part in operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Rfn Markey was killed in action on 31 March 1945, age 18, and was given a field burial at Greven, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany on 23 May 1947.
