Robert Guiney joined the Army in 1977 served 3 years in Germany with 8 regiment RCT. He went through pre parachute selection run by Hereford Garrison and completed Basic Parachute training at Brize Norton in 1981.
Robert then joined 63 Squadron RCT in 1984 and commanded the parachute section. Although a number of men within 63 Squadron were parachute trained the 10 members of the parachute section were the only members in role and entitled to draw parachute pay.
Robert took part in many exercises with the leading parachute battalion group (LPBG). The LPBG would either be 2 Para or 3 Para on rotation. They always deployed with the LPBG. When 2 Battalions were deployed in a Brigade exercise Robert's section would divide into two 5 man teams. One team would jump with the LPBG and the other team with the Following Battalion Group 24 hours later.
Each team was commanded by a corporal. On landing they would provide vehicles for moving heavy weapons such as mortars and 0.50 calibre machine guns as well as ammunition. Then they established resupply DZ's and the forward movement of supplies using vehicles and helicopter underslung loads. Once an airfield had been seized the remainder of 63 Squadron would air land.
The section was also used in the infantry role on occasion with individual soldiers placed into rifle platoons. Robert spent 1 exercise jumping in with 3 Para and spending the remainder of the exercise as a rifleman in 9 platoon C company. Robert's unit also went to Germany and gained German wings with 272 Fallschirmjager Battalion.
Robert left the Army in 1987.
