Sidney John Heath-Smith was the son of Sidney Vere and Constance Louise (Heath) Smith, of Boar’s Hill, Oxford; husband of Gillian Read Heath-Smith, of Moseley, Birmingham. On reaching the age of 21 he hyphenated his last two names and became known as Sidney John Heath-Smith.
After a period with the Officer Cadet Training Unit in Camberley he was commissioned into the 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Major Heath-Smith was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 26, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 16 April 1947.
