William (Bill) Woodward the territorial 1st Bn Liverpool (Scottish), Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, in January 1939 and then was embodied 2 September 1939 aged 20. Transferred to the Army Air Corp exactly a year later carried out training in Chesterfield and gained his Para 'wings' at RAF Ringway Course Number 28, which ran from 21 Sept 1942 to 28 Sept 1942. He was then promoted to War Substantive Corporal.
Embarked to North Africa 13 April 1943 disembarking 22 April 43
Placed under stoppages of pay for losing his .45 Colt Revolver 14 Aug 1943
Company stood down from Sicily and diverted to oversea landing in Taranto.
4th, 5th & 6th Bn Para formed The 2nd Independant Brigade under New Zealand Command. Bill was in the 5th (Scottish) Bn.
Bill was injured on 28 January 1944 in the foothills of Casoli by German rocket attack, he was withdrawn to the UK for rehabilitation. Unfortunately his injuries ended his campaign and he was demobbed in 1946.
Bill passed away in 2014 aged 92. He married Margaret (Peggy) and they didn’t have many children so his brothers 3 sons were very close to him.
