John Herbert Roberts was the son of Sydney and Louise M Roberts, of Galt, Ontario, Canada. He was 5’ 10”, 144 lbs, dark complexion, Brown eyes, dark brown hair and with 20/20 vision. He enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry of Canada on 1 June 1940. He arrived in Gourock, Scotland on 29 July 1941, and transferred to A Company, 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion on 3 March 1944 and qualified as a parachutist at RAF Ringway on 8 April 1944 and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Private Roberts and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion jumped into France on 5/6 June 1944. He was killed in action on 11 June 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial in an orchard at Le Mesnil, and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 25 June 1945.
